Climate Condition
The climate of Mussoorie is mild and entirely comfortable in summers,
temperature wavering below 30º C, winters are very cold, and temperature
falls drastically.
The Drive
The best and first thing that strikes one’s fascination is 34 km uphill
drive from Dehradun to Mussoorie. The one hour drive let one love the
exciting road routes, which are full of sharp turns and diversions.
Activities, such as horse riding, sightseeing places like lake, temple and
beautiful peaks, and nature walk keep travelers engaged in viewing the
natural beauty of its milieu.
Places of Visit
Surkhunda
Devi Temple
- Surkhanda Devi Temple is the Highest point in the area located at a
height of 3021 mt on the top of the hill. It is situated around 35 kms
from Mussoorie and 11 kms from Dhanaulti. It is an important pilgrimage
centre and is very famous around the locals and people residing in nearby
cities. The temple offers extensive view of the snow ranges and exclusive
experience one can never forget.
Dhanaulti
- If you walk past the clock tower in Mussoorie and look between the
plains and the rising slopes of Landour you will see a road to the green
meadows and deodar forests of Dhanaulti. A perfect holiday destination
with a new Eco Park which you will surely enjoy. It’s an actual hill
forest village environment with Himalayan breeze and is a delightful place
to spend a day.
Tehri Dam
– One should not forget to see the 42 kms lake next to the Tehri Dam, 60 kms
from Mussoorie and favorite for a day trip.
Lal Tibba -
Lal Tibba (2438.4 m) is the highest point of Mussoorie. There is a high
power binocular kept here which provides a close and magnificent view of
snow covered Gangotri, Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi and Sri Kanta
peaks. A television tower, which is at Lal Tibba, has been relaying
television programmes from Delhi since 12th August 1979.
Children lodge
- One of the high peak of Mussoorie near Lal Tibba, it is situated at 5
Kms. from the Mall road and one can go on horse back or on foot. The view
of snow-clad mountains is exhilarating.
Chaar Dukaan
– The four shops are actually famous here. You get a wide variety of home
made snacks and cheese, not to forget even maggi noodles or a pan cake or
waffles for that matter. This area is an elite area and people spend days
just wandering around. Celebes like Sachin Tendulkar, Prannoy Roy, Ruskin
Bond, Sanjay Narang, Tom Alter etc have their homes here.
Mussoorie lake
- A newly developed picnic spot build by City Board & Mussoorie Dehradun
Development Authority, is situated at 6 Kms on Mussoorie-Dehradun road
having a facility of pedaled boats. It offers a enchanting view of Doon
Valley and nearby villages. View during Night is marvelous.
Nag devta temple
- An ancient temple dedicated to Snake God Lord Shiva and is situated on
Cart Mackenjee road is about 6 kms from Mussoorie on way to Dehradun.
Vehicles can go right up to the temple. Place provides a enchanting view
of Mussoorie & Doon valley
Mosey fall
- The fall is surrounded by a dense forest and is 7 kms. from Mussoorie.
One can go there via Barlowganj or Balahisar. Trekking will be fun.
Jharipani fall
- Located at 8.5 Kms from Mussoorie on Mussoorie-Jharipani road. One can
go by local bus or car upto Jharipani from where the fall is about 1.5 Kms
on foot. A natural must try adventure trip.
Bhatta falls
- 7 Kms. from Mussoorie on Mussoorie-Dehradun Road near Bhatta Village.
Accessible by car or bus upto Bhatta from where the fall is 3 kms by foot.
The place is ideal for bathing and having picnic. A fall with different
ponds for bathing and water amusements, ideal place for picnic. A picnic
spot with a difference.
Cloud End
- The resort eight kilometers from Mussoorie is surrounded by thick deodar
forest and amazing valley view, ideally suited for foreigners and
honeymooners. The bungalow built in 1838 by a British major was one of the
first four buildings of Mussoorie has now been converted into a resort.
The place provides peace and calm and is full of flora and fauna. The echo
point near the bunglow is worth giving a call to and do not forget to be
with your loved one to romance on the treks in the jungle.
Sir George Everest House
- The place called Park Estate where building & laboratory of first
Surveyor General of India Sir George Everest after whom worlds highest
peak Mt. Everest is named stills stands. It is 6 kms from Mussoorie and
vehicle can go right upto the place. The place provides an enchanting view
of Doon Valley on one side and view of Yamuna Valley & snow bound
himalayan ranges on the other. An ideal place for picnic and trekking.
Jwalaji Temple
- This famous Hindu temple is located at a distance of 9 km from
Mussoorie. Dedicated to Goddess 'Durga', this temple is situated atop the
Benog Hill, at a height of 2100 m. Enveloped by thick forests from all
sides; the temple poses a striking picture. Moreover, one can have
breathtaking view of the Himalayan peaks, Doon Valley and the Yamuna
valley from this site.
Benog mountain quail sanctuary
- 11 kms to the south of Mussoorie lies an old sanctuary established in
1993 and covering an area of 339 hectares. It is famous for the extinct
bird species Mountain Quail(Pahari Bater), which was last spotted in 1876.
Van chetna Kendra
- At a distance of about 2 kms on Tehri byepass road, this place is
developed as picnic spot and has a park surrounded with pine forest and
flowering shrubs, and is approachable by foot or taxi/car. The main
attraction is the wildlife of the park like Ghurar, Kakar, Himalayan
peacock, Monal etc
Municipal
Garden / Company Garden - It is a picnic spot having a
beautiful garden, huge green lawns and an artificial mini lake with
paddled boating facility. A modern amusement children park with exclusive
artificial high water falls and water bodies has recently been developed.
It is located at a distance of 4 kms. From the mall road and can be
approached by rickshaw cycles, pony or by a car.
Lake mist
- About 5kms before Kempty fall on Mussoorie-Kempty road it is a newly
developed good picnic spot with restaurant facilities, boating is also
available.
Kempty falls
- Located at 13 Kms from Mussoorie on way to Yamunotri . It has a
distinction of being the biggest and prettiest waterfall located in a
beautiful valley and is surrounded by high mountains. Bath at the foot of
the fall is enjoyable and unforgettable experience during summer days.
Lakhamandal
- Lakhamandal is on the Yamnotri road past the Kempty falls. There are
hundreds of idols of archaeological importance which have been preserved
by the Archaeological Survey of India, according to the legend the
Kauravas made a shellac house and conspired to burn the Pandavas alive
here.
Yamuna
Bridge
– Just 30 kms from Mussoorie, a unique place to see the Yamuna with a huge
bridge next to it, Good for water sports,fishing and fish lovers.
Tibetan
Temple
– This temple is situated in Happy Valley area of Mussoorie. It is located
one kilometer from the famous Lal Bahadur Shastri National Administrative
Academy. The Tibetan temple is evidence to rich Tibetan cultural heritage.
Gun Hill
- This is the second highest peak in Mussoorie, offering an astounding
view of the Himalayas, a bird's eye view of Mussoorie and of course the
entire Doon Valley. This spot as it may be called a table top may be
reached through a Ropeway ride or a 20-minute trudge up a bridle path. The
thrill of the cable car ride is memorable and offers beautiful mind
boggling views. During pre-independence days a gun mounted on this top
used to be fired heralding mid-day to enable people to adjust their
watches and hence this name.
Camel's back road
- This is a 3 km stretch, enjoyable for walking and horse ridding. One can
get a spectacular view of the sunset in the Himalayas from here. The road
passes through an old British graveyard and is named after a rock
resembling the back of a sitting camel.
Horse riding and walking during evening is a memorable experience as it
offers a sunset view in the Himalayas.
Jawahar
Aquarium
– A new place of public interest just on the mall has much to offer as its
name. A unique concept in the hills and a thrill for children and as well
as tourists having a stroll on the mall with modern restaurant and latest
water bodies on one floor.
The Mall
- The mall is the main shopping area in Mussoorie. The mall road connects
the two bazaars, the Kulri Bazaar and the Library Bazaar. It is the heart
of the town. It offers once in a lifetime views of valleys, the hills and
a unique local market one of the best in its way amongst all hill
stations. Horses, Cycle rickshaws are available on the mall for amusement,
not to forget the local fruits sold at every point.
Landour
- Landour is actually the Mussoorie, it was here where first
establishments were made and is situated at the east endof the town.
Landour is a typical Indian style old bazaar.
Barlowganj
- Barlowganj is a quiet location, and if you happen to pass or go to this
area, you can go on long walks. You will come across little and big
bungalows, including some that are old colonial structures. Don’t miss
going to the grand old St George’s College campus in the vicinity – steep
climb and superb views (their football court overlooks the green valley!)
– make you envy those who study here.
Trekking
- Trekking can also be undertaken trom Mussoorie to Nag Tibba,
Hari-Ki-Doon, Chakrata and even to Yamnotri-Dodital.
